The network didnât even want to hear about me, but they had tested everybody else in creation for the role opposite Jameson, who already had his role. I donât know why they did, but⦠[Laughs.] I got the opportunity to chat with McRaney about his role in “Focus,” as well as his new series “Agent X” on TNT and his return to “Longmire,” heading to Netflix with season 4 later this year. How was the experience of doing the crossover with Magnum, P.I.? Thatâs all that was: They started out with a wonderful idea, a wonderful premise, and then started to second-guess what it was they were doing. But it didnât happen. Most people know Gerald McRaney from the long-running series Simon & Simon and Major Dad and more recently from House of Cards and from Longmire, in ⦠We were all distinctly different.âLongmire" also co-starred Katee Sackhoff, Lou Diamond Phillips and Gerald McRaney, known for his TV roles on "Major Dad" and "Simon & Simon" that Chase said he grew up watching. And you can actually plan a life around that schedule! AVC: Maybe they felt like you had to live up to Raquel Welchâs fashions. GM: Yeah, thatâs what it was. And I think people got timid. There are two. What the hell do I know about Hebrew? That was terrific. GM: Yeah! I improvised the last line I had with Jamesonâs character, which was, âSo long, pretty boy!â Because that had been my original take on him when I met him, when he and Phil came over to ask me to read for that role: âOh, geez, a pretty boy. So they started doing things likeâwe would talk incessantly about how weâre running out of food, and then by the end of the episode thereâd be a block party to pick up peopleâs spirits. Weâre trying to work out dates right now so that I can go back and do “Longmire” and this new series at the same time. The catch: They donât know beforehand what roles weâll ask them to talk about. AVC: Tusk was reportedly influenced by, if not directly based on, Warren Buffett. Itâs just in him. âLongmireâ will be available in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Heâs incredibly intelligent and has his own sometimes-bizarre take on life, but thereâs this essential truth to Milch. You know, it really doesnât matter what the role is, whether youâre playing brothers or friends or enemies. Wolfgang Petersen is, as you well know, one of the finest film directors ever, and I had justâwell, several months before being offered that role, Iâd seen Das Boot, and I was just blown away. He just loved actors. GM: Yeah. You can have the biggest star in the world; if the script isnât there, neither is the movie. Iâm sort of the barrier between the two, but my boss wonât listen to me. AVC: Did you know that going into it, or was it just something you picked up on? But I just thought they wrote me some fascinating and wonderful stuff to play, and I had a ball doing it. But it got me started. There were a couple of scenes in that film which were kind of overwritten, if you know what I mean. McRaney is best known as one of the stars of the television shows Simon & Simon, Major Dad, Promised Land and House of Cards. You know, we play adversaries, and normally I donât think civilians would think of what we do sometimes as being necessarily fun, but that especially is fun. That being the case, when the show got picked up for a second season at the final hour, I donât suppose it bothered you all that much that youâd died in the finale of season one. But normally he just loved everybody. AVC: Prior to your acting career, word has it that you got your hands dirty in the oil fields of Louisiana, but how did you find your way into acting in the first place? She discovers after she has gotten the job that there has been, throughout history, a special agent that works totally at the command of the vice president, and no one else in the government knows about this agent. [Laughs.] What do you think is the long-term appeal of “Simon & Simon”? If you give up the fantasy life, Iâm out of business⦠and who the hell wants that? Longmire is one of those people you love to watch, he is tough as nails and when it comes to family he will break any rules to ensure safety as best he can.
